The Beguiled   Why did it take me so long to watch the Beguiled? I was keenly aware of it (as I am with most projects involving Kirsten Dunst), it had a decent run in theatres, garnered good reviews, and even played at my local arthouse theatre. So, what happened? I can’t really say. I seem to have prioritized Alien Covenant and Baby Driver as my giant-theatre experiences and before I knew it, the Beguiled was gone.   Quite...

Night of the Living Dead 50th Anniversary Edition Let’s face it, the zombie bubble is starting to burst. And thank goodness for that. For a while there, zombies were the new pirates. Everywhere you looked there were new zombie movies being churned out, or comics, or books, or stupid TV shows. And also TV shows which were about those zombie TV shows. The truth is that zombie movies just aren’t that great, and its fanbase is a little dumb....

Wonder Woman   Is anyone surprised Wonder Woman turned out to be such a success this Summer? I know, I know, the movie studios claim this was a bad Summer for movies, which they equate to lower-than-expected profits on their movies. They even blame Rotten Tomatoes for pointing out that most of the Summer movies have been shit, not on the fact that they themselves put out shitty movies. But Wonder Woman? This movie made almost $900 million worldwide....

The Lawnmower Man How do you think a nerdy high school teen in the 90s would have processed a movie like the Lawnmower man when he first saw it? Let alone one that was literally living on a rock in the middle of the ocean. Even American TV was a novelty for us as we had just gotten cable. The internet wasn’t even a thing and most of us didn’t own a computer. But then a movie like...

The Paul Naschy Collection Shout! Factory Every now and then, a movie falls on your lap that charms the pants off you. This time it was five movies. Not having known a single thing about Paul Naschy, I really didn’t know what I was getting into when checking out this collection. But boy, am I glad I did. What you’re getting with Paul Naschy movies are visceral, low budget, and very interesting horror flicks. It’s not for nothing that he’s...

The Holy Mountain Blu-ray (Abkco)   Writer and director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s work truly defies categorization. They are graphic, religious, symbolic, but more than anything else, seek the truth. In that sense they can’t really be brushed off as the work of a mad man. Although one wonders what’s roaming around in Jodorowsky’s head.   We’ve covered El Topo already on this site, and as strange as that movie may seem, compared to it the Holy Mountain seems absolutely batshit crazy....

El Topo Blu-ray (Abkco)   If you haven’t seen the movie Jodorowsky’s Dune I highly recommend you stop what you’re doing and watch it immediately. Through the course of an hour and a half you will take this extravagant journey into probably the most ambitious movie ever attempted and into the mind of Alejandro Jodorowsky. To say that he comes across as eccentric might be an understatement, and it’s highly probable that you’ll leave the movie feeling inclined to learn...

The Red Turtle The Red Turtle comes at a very interesting time. Its calm and subtle style is in stark contrast to the current movie climate of jump cuts, fast-paced-action, and obvious plot lines. Even more, this obviously “western” project (Dutch director and European team) is produced by Studio Ghibli. So who is this movie for? Marketed by an anime studio, yet westernized in its look, mythical and ethereal in its tone? I think it’s important to have the right...

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence   Ghost in the Shell is back in the headlines, and I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing. It seems like the upcoming live-action remake of a classic like Ghost in the Shell is doomed to fail, not only because fan expectation is going to be so high, but also because Ghost in the Shell might not survive a Western translation. The original movie is so deep and I dread thinking...

Prison School: The Complete Series Prison School should be ashamed of itself, because honestly, I don’t know how anyone can take it seriously looking the way it does. I’m not trying to slut-shame anybody here, but a simple Google image search makes it clear who this show is targeting. Prison School is so overtly objectifying to women and geared towards horny males that it should be embarrassed. The female characters are cartoonishly sexual and the camera shots are clearly...
